With Medical Marijuana becoming legal in more states for recreational and medical use, is it time to allow athletes to use the drug? Explain your view...
If medical marijuana were to become legal in all fifty states for both recreational and medical usage, then I believe that athletes should be allowed to use the drug. There are many studies proving it’s health benefits which can help to cure many problems an athlete faces. Medical marijuana may also take away some of the very risky side effects and outcomes which are a result from prescribed drugs. It should not be required in any shape or form for one to take, but it should be offered as a health benefit to those who need it. If it is legalized in certain sports, every team or player should sign a contract saying that they understand that it is allowed and can be used.
The reason I believe that this should be held off until all fifty states legalize the drug is because certain teams may have the advantage of having it legalized in their home state. While there is most likely a way that those athletes could still get it, it would be unfair and controversy would rise from it.
If this legalization were to happen I believe that a contract must be signed in order to guarantee that everyone knew it was allowed. This would ensure the fairness of the usage and game, causing no problems.
I think that medical marijuana should be legal for athletes to use. Based off the article linked, while cannabis hasn't been researched extensively, there are potentially many benefits athletes can gain from taking it after games and using it to recover. It helps reduce stress and anxiety and most importantly acts as an analgesic. Because of this, medical marijuana can be used instead of opioids and other pain relieving medicines that can be very harmful. Many of the pain relieving medications that athletes are prescribed have countless long term negative effects and sometimes are much more addicting than marijuana. Based off of this article, cannabis can relieve pain without all of the negative side effects that come with taking opioids and other synthetic medications. If athletes were allowed to take cannabis instead of the pain relieving medications they are prescribed, their quality of life would be improved.
If athletes are allowed to use cannabis, the league has to make sure that athletes have equal access to it. That way no player or team has an advantage over any of the other teams.
I think that medical marijuana should be legal for athletes to use. It seems as if there are far fewer side effects of cannabis than other prescription pain relievers, such as opioids. Many of pain relievers that are currently prescribed to athletes are quite addictive, and cannabis is said to be less addictive than some of the current pain relievers approved for athletes to use.
However, I do think that if athletes were to be allowed to use medical marijuana, there must be rules that come with it, such as only allowing certain dosages, drug tests, and reporting all dosages taken. Although cannabis is such a controversial drug, I do believe that athletes should be allowed to use medical marijuana, as in their cases, it helps them more than it harms them.
I believe that if it becomes legal in all states, then athletes should be able to use it. I think that based on how it has helped Turley and other athletes, it should be allowed to help players deal with pain and injuries that they get from playing. I think that because of the amount of deaths from opioids, it is a good idea to move away from them since they can become so addictive even after a player's career is over.
Although, I think that the NFL shouldn't quickly raise the limit or make it legal for players. Unlike other drugs, I don't think that there has been enough research, especially on the long term effects. I think only after finding out the results of experiments, the NFL should come to a conclusion.
I think by letting athletes use marijuana, whether it's legal or not will lead to the same problem there is today with performance enhancing drugs. There will be an unfair advantage to those who take it. If marijuana does someday become legal in all 50 states then there's no unfair advantage, but since it's only legal in some states, athletes shouldn't be able to use it.
I think if medical marijuana is legal for all of the United States, then athletes should also be included in that. However, there will have to be some rules and limits so it doesn't result with advantages. I don't believe athletes in a state where it is legal should be allowed to use marijuana because not all the team's in the country are allowed to be exposed to it. Especially because players experience painful injuries from the sport, they might need it just to not be in constant pain. However, according to the article, if cannabis releases pain with better side effects than marijuana, then that should be allowed for the same reasons. Overall, it should be regulated but allowed because if it is a right there is no reason only athletes should be disregarded.
Jesse Haymes: I think that it is unfair to allow athletes to use medical marijuana. Similar to performance enhancing drugs, players that use cannabis will be affected in different ways and this can give players an unfair advantage in particular sports. I also think that pain endurance is part of the thrill of the sport. Players have been able to deal with the pain without complaining. Just because certain technology has emerged, it doesn't mean that it should be implemented. Plus, players can use medical marijuana as an excuse for using marijuana recreationally. Since marijuana is currently illegal most US states, it is not fair for certain players to be able to use the drug while most other players are not. Once the drug is legalized in other states, leagues can consider discussing the issue.
I think that while marijuana is illegal in some states still, it would provide an unfair advantage with athletes coping with the physical and mental pain that comes with playing a taxing sport like football. Once medical and recreational marijuana is legal in every state in America, it should be allowed to be used by professional athletes. As said in the article, many players need to relax and heal their bodies without filling themselves with possibly dangerous drugs. To be perfectly honest it seems like the side effects and possible abuse of antidepressants are much worse than any side effect of marijuana.
To me marijuana should not be acceptable for athletes to use. First off, I believe it will effect play in some players and cause them to be lazier on the field and become way too reliant on it. Some players might even use it purely recreationally and claim its for "medical" reason. I also believe that some players who use it will have an unfair advantage over players who don't when dealing with pain, many studies and the article state how players use medicinal marijuana to recover easier. To me "forgetting" about the pain could possibly cause future problems and injuries. Pain is there for a reason so it can be treated not so it can be forgotten. This seems dangerous and overall could effect the leagues negatively.
I think if marijuana is ever legalized nationwide, players should have the ability to use it medicinally. However, if it stays the way today with many states keeping marijuana illegal, I would say it shouldn't. I would be worried about players crossing state lines with a drug that may not be illegal where they started but is where they're going. I also think the goal of "forgetting the pain" is an awful one. This is what has led to the use and abuse of prescription painkillers in many sports, including hockey where former enforcers Derek Boogaard, Wade Belak, Rick Rypien, and Steve Montador have died in the last 8-10 years due to complications from overdoses. If marijuana is to be used in the same way, I would say it should not be legalized.
I think if medical marijuana is ultimately allowed in all 50 states then yes by all means it should be allowed. The push for all the 50 states to accept even just medical marijuana is tough but athletes could actually publicize the issue. Sports leagues are going to need to set guidelines for athletes to follow and and make sure they are using it properly and in the right prescribed proportions. The sports leagues to need be aware if an athlete is using marijuana in their physica.
I think marijuana can be a very useful when being used to help NFL players recover from injuries but I still don't think NFL players should be allowed to use it. One of the biggest rules in the NFL is no player can have access to an unfair advantage over another player. The use of marijuana should not be allowed in NFL because it's not legal in all states so not all NFL players can use it. I think medicinal marijuana should be allowed once it gets legalized in the 22 states with NFL teams, but until then it should not.
I think it has to become legal in all states in order for athletes to be able to use Medical Marijuana. This ensures all players have legal access and the game is still considered fair. Not only does the drug help players physically recover from games, but the use of this drug has worked in the past, especially in the NFL. It is a better alternative to the massive amounts of painkillers most of the players use.
I think that Medical Marijuana should not become able to use within sports, I think it would be a disadvantage to the sports teams in states where marijuana is still illegal. I don't think it should be aloud unless there are nationwide rules to ensure everything is regulated and fair. The opposing side may argue it is a way to have the players overcome many injuries but once it is allowed to be used many people can over use it and abuse the opportunity. There would need to be set rules and regulations to this.
After reading this article, I do agree with the fact that the use of medical marijuana can affect athletes in a positive way. The article states that medical marijuana can help depression and anxiety, issues that many athletes deal with during tough times in their careers. Medical marijuana can also help relieve pain, which is something all athletes have to deal with at some point in their careers. However, much like steroids and other PEDs, medical marijuana can give players that decide to use it an unfair advantage. Players that choose to not take drugs shouldn't be at a disadvantage because of their decision. Therefore, medical marijuana shouldn't be used in sports even if it becomes legal in all states.
Medical Marijuana once legalized is free for anyone to use in that state country or what not. It is important to manage the use of marijuana and only use it in the places where it is legal obviously. Other than that though there shouldn't be any restrictions on NFL users of the drug because it is better than cigarettes and actually can have a positive effect on the players or whoever wants to use the drug. The NFL shouldn't care if it is legal in a given player's state, but if a change doesn't occur then the athletes should express their opinion. It is a banned substance so being caught would be detrimental but at the end of the day if it is legal with the state then why should it be illegal for the NFL?
The sports leagues should catch up with the nation if its becomes a federal thing then they should allow it. there is a huge problem with opioids and other pain killers. Players have been interviewed and said that they would rather smoke weed than take pain killers. So many players are addicted and this could solve that problem. Lastly the Leagues shouldn't be there own small governments as long as it doesn't give players and unfair advantage they shouldn't tell their players what they can and can not do.
I think the use of marijuana is way safer than the other options like opioids. Marijuana isn't addictive like opioids and in most cases safer than most other legal drugs. Once all states that host professional football teams gain legal access to medical marijuana, all players in the nfl should be able to legally apply lotions and other weed based healers. This drug will be way less abused and easily regulated, as well as stopping a lot of stupid suspensions and fines caused by innocent players trying to get better faster.
In my opinion, Marijuana should be available to use for athletes, contingent on the law. If recreational or medical marijuana laws within state allow players to obtain it, players should be able to use it. As the article states, Marijuana can help relieve pain and pressure obtained from the athletes' corresponding sport. It shows stronger long term effects than other drugs, such as painkillers, or opioids. If players report and follow the procedure required by the sport's administration, I don't see a problem in allowing it. Also, if it is reported properly and legally by the players, the league will have the ability to regulate it.
