Should the NHL be able to withhold their players from the Olympics?

What’re your thoughts on the NHL holding their players back from the olympics? Should it be up to the NHL or to the players to decide to go or not?

  1. I think that the NHL shouldn't be allowed to hold players back from the Olympics. The Olympics are a world-renowned competition, and most athletes aspire to be good enough to compete in them. By not allowing players to compete in the Olympics, the NHL may lose great players to smaller foreign leagues, something that would hurt the league.

I think that it should really be up to the players and their coaches. I think that when a player signs a contract, it should state whether or not that player will be allowed to compete in the Olympics. Being good enough to compete in the Olympics is amazing, but not being allowed to have that opportunity may cause hockey players to decide not to sign with an NHL team, as they may value the Olympics over an NHL career.

  2. I think that what the NHL is ordering is unfair to the players. I believe that the best hockey players should be the ones going to represent the United States or their respective country in the Olympics, and just that they play in the NHL should not prohibit them from going. I think it's unfair to younger players who have never been to the Olympics, since they will never have that experience which they deserve. I also think that since some coaches are in agreement with the players, there is no reason why they shouldn't go. The opposition may say that they could get injured, but they essentially have the same chance of getting injured as playing in an NHL game. Another benefit to these players going to the Olympics is that it can popularize hockey around the world. This is a goal of the NHL, and can be accomplished more easily by sending the best players to compete. Overall, I don't really see any downside to NHL players competing in the Olympics; it's such an incredible opportunity that they should be able to participate in if they qualify.

  3. I think the NHL should be able to say that as a league there won't be a break in the season for the Olympics. However I don't think they should be able to ban NHLers from going. They should say that if a player wants to go, they are doing it at a cost to their team, that cost being their team playing 7-8 games while they are at the Olympics. I still find this decision baffling by the NHL. They have talked about spreading the game internationally, and are playing games in Sweden and China in upcoming years with a goal of playing in the 2022 Winter Olympics in China. They shouldn't be able to pick and choose which Olympics to attend, and I wouldn't be surprised if this decision leads the IOC to keep the NHL out of China 2022. On a final note, this is basically handing the gold medal to Russia as their pros (KHL) will still be able to play in Korea. The whole point of the Olympics is best-on-best hockey, and the NHL saying they aren't going detracts from that.

  4. I think that they should hold players back. Their career is in the NHL and they are under contract so whatever the NHL wants to do they should do. The olympics used to be about amateurs and for those young players to get a chance on a world stage, not a bunch of pros creating these mega dream teams. The NHL employees these players so it should be at their discretion how the olympics is taken. If players don't accept this then they shouldn't be in the NHL but they must see the consequences with doing this like the possibility of not making any money in foreign leagues. Let the kids play and let them prove their worth and let the pros play in the pro leagues.

  5. I think that the NHL should be able to tell the players they can't play in the Olympics. The main reason they don't want them playing is because they don't want them to get hurt. If the players get hurt then it is bad for the NHL who is without their top players. Also, the players play in the NHL who gets to decide what they can and can't do.

  6. I think its blasphemous, a gold medal unlike in other sports is as huge if not on par with sir stanles cup its self. This is wrong and just stop it.

  8. I think that it should be the players choice because they should be able to tell whether they want to represent their country or not. Anyways a gold metal for the players is a big deal so most likely they will want to go to the olympics so they should be able to compete in it. NHL should have some say but the ultimate decision should be up to the players. A gold metal could be an ultimate goal for a player in hockey so they should be able to if they want to. Since NHL players won't be in the Olympics it will be easy for countries that don't have an input of NHL players from their country an easy advantage. NHL has the some of the top players in the world so they should be able to decide if they want to be apart of it.

  9. NHL players should be able to participate in the NHL olympics if they'd like. The olympics is a time to represent your country and show your patriotism. Yes, it does mess with the NHL season and the team's success, however, players strive for a gold medal for their country. I do not think the solution is as simple as letting or not letting them go, as players signed contracts with a team, meaning they are required to play (contingent on the coach) for them. I think they should be allowed to let them play, but I don't think it will work out that way.

On the other hand, if the NHL doesn't let them play, Russia, who hosts the KHL (the second best hockey league in the world), would win with their players. But then again, Miracle on ice happened, so why can't it happen again? If there's no NHL players, it could make it interesting to see who steps up.

  10. I think that they NHL should not have a say in whether or not their players are allowed to play. This is unfair because players often dream of representing their country in the Olympics. It seems unfair to take that opportunity away from any NHL players because of profit motivated reasons. The odds that many players get injured to the point where it affects the NHL is quite slim. It also doesn't make sense for the NHL to do this because there are no other major sport leagues that have such a restriction. The NBA and MLB both allow players to go to the Olympics. If the players are all against this ruling, then this seems to be a decision made out of NHL benefit rather than trying to aid the players. Plus, the players are the way the NHL makes money so they deserve the right to do what they want and not be controlled by the NHL.

  11. I think that the NHL shouldn't be allowed to hold back players from the Olympics. The best hockey players in the country should represent each country in the Olympics. Many athletes aspire to be in the Olympics, and why should joining a professional league restrict them from doing so? The United States should send the best athletes of every discipline - no matter if they are amateur or professional. The Olympics are supposed to be a competition of the best athletes in the world, therefore the NHL should not hold back their athletes - the best hockey players in the country - from competing in the 2018 Olympics. It should be up to the NHL player's discretion whether or not they choose to compete in olympic trials and potentially take part in the Olympic games. However, it could be interesting to see an amateur American team competing again. Maybe another Miracle on Ice can take place.

  12. I think that since the players get paid and organized by the NHL they have to follow the rules dictated by them. That being said I think it's the wrong decision by the NHL as for many players this is the ultimate goal for them; to make the olympic team and if not grab a gold medal. To help grow the game, NHL needs to allow their players to go international to help spread the game.

  13. I think the NHL should not hold back players from the Olympics, I think it is the players choice because it is important to send the best team possible to represent America and most hockey places I'm sure want to go and have been working towards going. Although the owners of the teams have to fund the players to go, It would be good representation for their team to be able to send players to play in the olympics and should ultimately be the players choice to decide to play more games for the country. The NHL is causing hockey to misrepresent their sport in the biggest stage in sports.

  14. I think that it's the player's choice whether or not to play in the Olympics, not the NHL's decision. This decision by the NHL was not in the contract the players signed when they joined NHL teams. Winning a gold medal means the world to some NHL players, and players want to represent their countries in the biggest sports competition in the world. Also by having their players sit out in the Olympics, the NHL is missing out on a huge opportunity to market themselves in Asia by having the best hockey players play in Korea.

  15. The NHL is completely justified in their actions to hold back their players from the NHL. It is their job to play in the NHL not in the Olympics. They are paid to listen to their rules and follow them in order to get paid at the end of the day. Not all jobs are going to be the one you want and that is how the NHL is. If they want to change it they can appeal for it but it is just one of those things that your employer gets to decide for you.
On the other hand it does make sense for the players to actually play and go to the Olympics because it is for the best athletes in the world to showcase their abilities. This can bring in more revenue for NHL players as well. The players are justified to not like the rule. It is just that they did sign a contract agreeing to the rules and regulations of the NHL.

  16. I think the NHL should be able to regulate whether or not players can participate in the Olympics. Playing in the Olympics is not the priority for these players, because they are under a NHL contract and are being paid to play in NHL games. Because of this, I think the NHL should be able to withhold its players. If the players were allowed to play for their country during the NHL season, it could cause problems for the NHL. The NHL would lose viewership to the Olympic games, and problems involving injury could arise. If an NHL player gets injured mid-season during an Olympic game, the NHL team would be very angry. With these issues in place, The NHL should be able to decide if the players can play in the Olympics.

  17. I think that the National Hockey League should allow their players to go to the Olympics in 2018. As one of the players said on twitter, if the best players from many countries around the World cannot play, then it is misrepresenting the sport of hockey. If the game of hockey is misrepresented at such a big stage, then it could result in hurting the sport rather than possibly helping it if the right players were there. Getting the gold medal is extremely important to these hockey players and it enrages them that the NHL is not willing to accommodate. The solution should have the NHL season suspended for the few weeks where the Olympics would take place.

  18. I think it should be up to the player to decide whether or not they want to play in the Olympics. The NHL is the only sport that restricts their players from playing in the Olympics. These players practice and work hard their entire lives to have the honor to represent their country on the world stage. No person or organization should have the authority to take that right from a person if they're qualified enough.
