It is evident that coaches have a huge impact on the performance of an athlete. Before a ski competition, what my coach says can determine the outcome of my run. If my coach tells me everything I'm doing wrong right before I go, I usually perform worse than if they were to say good luck, you've got this. A coach is usually the last person an athlete talks to before a game, match, competition, etc. There are two types of coaching styles: friendly and fierce. The friendly coach is the one that allows the athlete to make decisions, the fierce one does not. Neither coaching style is better than the other, each athlete has their own preference and each style has their pros and cons. I think that while coaching style/skills matter, the coach's mindset is what impacts the athlete the most. If a coach is stressed and frantic on the side of the field, yelling out negative comments, then an athlete will also feel stressed and frantic, too. It is important for coaches to keep a cool head and stay positive. A negative coach results in self-conscious players. A coach should build a player's self esteem, not break it down, particularly during an intense/important game. This is essential because an unconfident player will not perform their best and will most likely hurt the team more than help it. A good coach should also not be focused on winning, but on helping their team become better. If a team loses a hard game but played very well, the coach should not penalize the team. During basketball, I felt all the coaches were very positive and encouraging. Most of the coaches were friendly coaches as opposed to fierce coaches.
Coaching can play a huge role in the success of a team. Coaches provide an outside point of view and a level of understanding that a player cannot give to their team. In the games or competitions, their decisions in key moments and advice to players can be the difference between losing and winning. They have been studied the game longer than the players have and know how to handle certain situations in their favor. Another way they help the team, besides their decisions in the game, is through their coaching style. There are two main coaching styles: strict and friendly. Strict coaching can keep a team attentive and aggressive, but most of the time it can demoralize a team. Negative comments can destroy a player's confidence and result in poor performances in important competitions. Friendly coaching is a much better approach when coaching players. Boosting a players confidence and helping them realize their strengths go a long way. A confident player will always outperform a nervous, unconfident one. Good coaches encourage their players to work harder and improve. It's hard for a player to improve on their own or keep a strong work ethic, and one of a coaches role is to tell them that they can do improve and will improve. They realize that their goal should be to help their players become better and as a result they win more. In our basketball games, the coaching was very friendly and positive. Coaches from the sideline could be heard shouting out words of encouragement to their teams. Even when a player made a mistake, there was only praise for him trying. This made everyone feel comfortable playing and not pressured.
Coaches are obviously a major deciding factor being a good and great team. Just look at college football and how much they pay their coaching staff. Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Michigan football team, gets paid over 9 million dollars a year just to boss around a bunch of 20 year olds. However, the truth is that he gets paid so much because a coach does a lot more than just boss kids around. A coach plays as the unbiased opinion on a team that everyone trusts because he no motives behind his decisions besides to win. Coaches have the power to get inside every single player's head and change their mentality in any situation just by the sound a few meaningful words. In the articles you gave us I read about coaches who take the nice cop approach by focusing mainly on positive encouragement and I also read about coaches who take the bad cop approach by grilling their kids with extensive discipline. Both of these types of coaches can be equally successful but it all depends on the players they’re coaching. It’s a coach's job to recognize the players they have and figure out the coaching style that will work best with each of their players. I’ve played sports my entire life and after being coached by all different types of coaches I can surely that they make huge impact on the success of a team. Last Friday in the gym when we played basketball had the opportunity to play the role of the player and the coach. To be honest, in the games the coaches didn't have much effect on how the players played which made me realize how hard it is to be a coach. When I was the coach I was able to realize that getting a bunch a teenagers to come together and listen to you is much harder than it looks. This experiment aside, I still believe that when the coach get the players to listen to him, it will make a huge impact on the team.
Coaches have a significant impact on players and their athletic careers. Coaches can make or break teams and individual players. The articles discussed there being two types of coaching styles, one being more authoritarian where the coach disciplines the team and is very controlling and strict, and the other technique is one where the coach gives more discretion to the players and keeps a calmer disposition and more leeway to the players. However I think neither style is better or worse as long as the coach maintains a good positive attitude, the attitude of the coach transfers to the athletes. For example the team can sense when the coach gives up and will usually play worse because of it. Also the coach should set expectations high, it is important that the coach has confidence in the team and their abilities as this also transfers onto the players. The coach should also keeps personal feelings aside from each player, and never talk about players to other players, the relationship should be professional but also it is important that the coach knows all the players individually because some players respond to different coaching techniques and every kid is different. All coaches during the basketball games were pretty positive and active during the game. This helped keep a light helped attitude throughout the game. Coaching is really difficult as I learned from coaching at the game and also coaching rec field hockey.
Coaches can either make a break or team. They're the driver, the pilot, captain, and the team's rock. In the end, they're the ones responsible for how a team plays, acts, and reflects itself. Their gameplay, philosophy, and playing style directly impacts the decisions and results of games, and seasons. Glenn Reese said, his/her personal beliefs, goals, objectives, and standards all factor into their own personal ideas and philosophies.
Different styles of coaching stem from their beliefs and philosophies. Obviously, there are several different styles of coaching. A coach can either be very hands on or very passive. They can either teach their team be aggressive or patient. There’s hundreds of factors that make up a team’s personality, all coming from the coaches beliefs. As far as coaching in our basketball games went, to me, it seemed to be a very passive coaching position. The players on the court dictated the offense. The only thing the coaches really handed was subbing, as in volunteering to step out and asking when to come in.
As far as the most effective coaching method, it really depends on the team chemistry and what works for them. If something doesn’t work one way, it’s the coaches job to restructure the game plan and try again. Scores, teams, and time left in a game are all incorporated into a coaches decision to roll out a different game plan.
For me, I think I will respond to whatever coaching plan is put in front of me. The coaches know best, so if they say do that, I’ll do it.
Coaches are pivotal components of teams in all types of sports. Whether the coach is sitting in the bleachers to watch their tennis players or calling plays from the sideline, coaches in every sports affect the game and the performance of the players. In most sports, a coach can be the deciding factor on whether or not the team will be good. I think this is best shown by European soccer. There are a handful of super teams in Europe, but they occasionally have bad seasons due to their coaches tactics. On the other hand, lower tier teams with much less money and talent will have very successful seasons if the coach has good tactics. Soccer clubs constantly hire and fire coaches, which shows how important a good coach is to each club. The articles we read talked about different styles coaches use. Some coaches are very aggressive and harsh, while others are patient and quiet. There are successful coaches on both sides of the spectrum. In college basketball, you will find coaches like Tom Izzo and Rick Pitino who will scream at players from the sideline, and you will also find coaches like Mike Krzyzewski who are calmer when they coach players. Nonetheless, all three coaches have been extremely successful. In my experiences, I have enjoyed the calmer coaches more. I feel like the coaches instructions are conveyed to me better when it is in a nicer tone. When the coach constantly yells, it puts a lot of pressure on you and makes you nervous. In our basketball games in class, the coaches had little to no impact on the players. This is why the game was extremely disorganized. The fact that our games were disorganized shows that no matter the amount of talent, coaches are critical to teams in order to tie everything together.
After the basketball activity on Friday, I realized that coaching is more difficult than it seems. It is particularly difficult to coach players while they are playing since they are already focussed on the game. Our team lost both of the games that we were in, and coaching may have had something to do with that. Both of the other teams we had were constantly scoring by driving to the hoop, while we took most of our shots from the outside. As a coach, it would have been better if I had recognized this and told the team to try to drive more. Even though there were no lineups to set, this game also showed how hard setting lineups can be. The other team had way more height than us in the first game, so we had a hard time defending them on the inside. At the same time, they also had Cua, who is a good shooter. It would be hard to decide whether we our team needed more height or perimeter defense, since both of these were an issue. After the game, I realized that these are the type of game-time decisions that coaches have to make if they want to win. The other thing that I noticed as a coach was how hard it is to motivate your team when they are losing. Players generally get frustrated and make bad decisions when they are losing. In our case, players started to shoot the ball from really far out, and nobody could score. I tried to tell the team to drive, but it didn’t go very well. We already looked defeated when we were down 2-0. Overall, I thought that coaching was a hard task and definitely more difficult than it initially seems. -Jesse H.
Coaches are meant to keep their team running smoothly and cooperatively by using encouraging yet disciplinary words. They have to make sure none of their players drag down the team and if any of them need a rest they let them have it. In our basketball game we played the coaches didn’t really do much besides cheer their team on. This led to a lot of bad teamwork and lack of effort. Some players rarely got to touch the ball and lots of bad shots were taken without punishment. The articles we read talked about different types of coaching whether it’s yelling at players or quietly reprimanding them when they step off the court. Lots of different strategies work for basketball and many other sports. Many people think that coaches don’t do much and it’s just up the players that play in the game to decide the outcome. I would like to disagree with that at the college and professional levels. Coaches make all the difference and it is very easy to tell when a coach has been doing a good job or not. That’s why the best coaches in college basketball like Coach K for Duke, get paid upwards of $10 million a year. All in all I learned that coaching is a very difficult thing to be good at and it makes a big difference when you have a good coach on your team versus a lazy one. That being said, a bad coach is better than no coach, and for our game it was nice to have a coach that could cheer us on or give us advice.
