Girl's Lacrosse Helmets

Should helmets be required in girl's lacrosse? Should players be able to choose whether or not they wear them?

  1. Girl's lacrosse should allow players to choose whether or not they wear these helmets. Girls lacrosse is definitely not extremely dangerous but concussions are still possible. Most girls will go through years of playing lacrosse and never worry about concussions or head injuries. However, if a player has been injured in the past to their head, they might need helmets so that they prevent any further injury. I just don't think there is enough examples or evidence that helmets are completely necessary and in the end they might constrict mobility and sight. It should just be a decision for the players and their families to make.

  2. I do not think helmets should be required for girl’s lacrosse. I think this because contact is not legally allowed in girl’s lacrosse as it is in men’s lacrosse; the sport is a noncontact sport.  Although the sport is played in the air, I do not think the girls are at a high enough risk of concussion to change all of the rules. The concussion statistics are not high enough to call for an immediate change. I think eventually the girls will have to wear helmets as concussion injuries are on the rise and are becoming more and more of an issue that is talked about. As of now I think girls should each be able to choose if they want to wear a helmet, but I do not believe that it is necessary.

  3. I think that helmets should be required in girl's lacrosse, despite the fact that the sport is considered "non-contact". If a ball comes flying out of nowhere or a stick gets too high, it is extremely possible for a female athlete to get a concussion. Even though the concussion statistics are low for Long Island female lacrosse players, this does not mean they didn't get head injuries while playing. Even though the helmets may slightly restrict mobility, it is much better to be safe than sorry. Concussions are a major problem and downside of contact sports, and even though girl's lacrosse isn't necessarily considered a contact sport, there are still opportunities for players to receive head injuries. Helmets may seem unnecessary, but they can prevent serious issues.

  4. I think that helmets in girl's lacrosse are unnecessary. This is because it technically is a "non-contact" game. While there may be danger of somebody getting hit by a stick or a ball, the rules of the game have been sculpted over the years to prevent this from happening in order to insure safety for players. The helmets designed by Cascade, a reputable producer of men's helmets, are nothing more than glorified bike helmets. They offer little extra protection to the alternative of a face mask. I think that if women's lacrosse wants to move in the direction of helmets, they are much better off just wearing the fully protective men's helmets.

  5. I think that girls lacrosse players should be able to choose whether or not they want to wear a helmet. Although girls lacrosse is a mostly non-contact sport, there are occasional head injuries. These injuries do not happen often, so it should be a decision each player can make on whether or not they want to wear a helmet. These helmets are probably uncomfortable, so it isn't fair to make it a requirement to wear one if head injuries are rare.

  6. I think that helmets should be required in girls lacrosse for multiple reasons. I know that girls lacrosse is supposed to be a non contact sport, but I can personally say from playing boys lacrosse that with a sport that involves metal shafts there will always be uncontrollable mistakes causing injuries. These helmets will help prevent concussions and other injuries to the face that could've been caused by flying shots or an accidental check to the face. Besides for safety, these helmets could also help to make the game of girls lacrosse move more smoothly by allowing it to get rid of some of its over protective rules. With girls being more protected they can get rid of rules that constantly disrupt the game of girls lacrosse making it more fun for the players. Overall, besides for the only negative being the feel of the helmet, this new equipment has the potential to make the game safer and more fun for all participants.

  7. I think that girls lacrosse helmets are not a good idea for girls lacrosse. Being a player, one key aspect of the game is that there is no contact to the head. Although, you would be safer wearing a helmet, I think it would encourage contact and could increase concussions. I think that there are benefits, because someone will have a smaller risk of injury if they do get hit in the head. I think that it would have more drawbacks than benefits as it would increase contact. Refs have become more strict about shooting space and other calls, which help reduce the risk of an athlete getting hit in the head. Overall, I think that helmets are an unnecessary part of the girls lacrosse game.

  8. I think that helmets should be required to be worn for girls lacrosse. The balls they play with are very heavy and can cause concussions and major damage to your face. Although theres no checking like in mens lacrosse, contact could still come into play with the sticks and balls flying around. Even if the slight chance that it only saves one player once per game thats enough to have the need to require helmets. One concussion can have effects that last a lifetime.

  9. Helmets should be required in girls lacrosse. It makes the game a lot safer and can lower the amount of concussions in the sport. While girls lacrosse is a non-contact sport, there are so many moving parts that it's easy for an accident to occur. A ball being passed across the field can easily be misguided and hit someone in the head. Sticks being waved around trying to intercept the ball or catch it can wind up hitting a lacrosse player instead. The helmets that are being designed for girls lacrosse are also lightweight and should not hinder a player's level of play.

  10. I think girls should be required because even though girls laccrose isn't a contact sport, accident's and concussions happen. I've ridden a bike for most of my life now and and I've falled off my bike twice on the road and I haven't landed on my head. It doesn't mean I'm immortal and I won't ever land on my head. If I do without a helmet, that's some serious and damaging head trauma. Girls should have helmets that don't change the style of the game and aesthestics of lacrosse but keep players safe.
